Exhaustion still pulled at her eyelids when Kendra woke. But the scent in the air was something she couldn't resist. Still rubbing her eyes, she made her way downstairs to find Lorne cooking. A stack of steaks, ready to be grilled, sat on the counter next to a fresh salad and potatoes. Her mouth watered.

Lorne looked up and smiled at her. Something twisted in her chest, and for the millionth time that week, she found herself teary-eyed.

Freaking pregnancy.

“Hungry?”

“Starving,” she confessed.

“I was hoping it might draw you downstairs. Rolls are already in the oven.” He waggled his eyebrows at her, and her heart went from twisting to melting.

Shit, she was in trouble. Falling for this man would be the easiest thing she'd ever done. Firmly, she did her best to mentally stamp out the feelings. Even though all she wanted to do was embrace them. Falling for him wasn't an option. If he married her now, it would be because of the baby. And she wanted more than that for herself. Deserved more than that.

She wasn't her mother.

Her mother and father had married for one reason—because Kendra was on the way. The years that had followed—years full of bitter fights, vicious backstabbing, and ignoring their daughter for their own battle—still weighed heavily on Kendra's mind.

To this day, her parents didn't seem to realize that their sacrifice—staying together for their daughter's sake—had messed her up far more than she imagined a divorce could have.

And that wasn't something she'd ever subject her daughter or son to. Never.

Shaking off the bad memories, she watched Lorne toss a salad, the slight flexing of his arms as he moved sending shivers up her spine.

No. Bad. Quit looking.

“How do you like your steak cooked?”

Her stomach responded with a loud grumble. “I like it now, apparently.” She grinned and then opened her mouth to say “well done,” but she stopped herself. The thought of the crispy meat—normally the only way she could stomach red meat—made her tummy turn in revulsion. “Medium rare, I guess.”

He arched a brow at her. “You aren't sure?”

“I'm not really much of a meat eater, but I think this baby would eat it right out of the fridge,” she replied crabbily.

A low, rich baritone of a laugh. “A baby bear shifter would eat it straight off the cow.”

Her mouth watered even as her brain rebelled at the idea. Holy crap. This baby was so going to be a bear shifter.

Blood rushed to her head, and she forced a deep breath. Before she could so much as feel unsteady on her feet, Lorne was at her side, arm wrapped around her and a hand under her elbow.

“You should sit.” His voice was steady, but the way he'd moved… It was incredible.

Her baby would move like that.

A fresh wave of fear rushed over her, and the room spun. She leaned against Lorne, mind spinning, as well. What the hell was she going to do with a tiny person who, in addition to throwing the
